Planning guide

ICU equipment checklist

Planning an intensive care unit starts with one bed space and multiplies out. This guide organises the systems that are normally planned together; it does not offer clinical recommendations.

Start at the bed space

Every critical care bed needs a fixed set of services: medical gas outlets, sufficient electrical outlets including back-up supply, working space on three sides of the bed, and a suitable position for the monitor.

Core systems

SystemPlanning notes
VentilatorsCount against bed numbers; circuit and consumable availability
Bedside monitoringCompatibility with the central station
Central monitoringStation location and sightlines from the nursing point
Infusion and syringe pumpsPumps per bed and mounting
ICU bedsPositioning functions and cleanability
Bedhead units and pendantsDistribution of gases, power and network points

Supporting infrastructure

  • Oxygen, medical air and vacuum sized for full load
  • Back-up power for critical devices
  • Infection control: hand-wash points, route separation, cleanable surfaces
  • Nearby storage for high-turnover consumables

Common planning gaps

  • Sizing oxygen capacity for routine rather than peak use
  • Buying monitors that do not integrate with the central station
  • Leaving consumables out of the first budget
  • Not allowing enough training time before go-live
