Types of maintenance

Start with an inventory
You cannot manage what is not listed. Record for each device: location, serial number, installation date, service interval, last visit and critical spare parts. This inventory is the basis of any sensible service contract.
Setting priorities
- Life-support devices first, then critical diagnostic systems
- Devices whose failure stops an entire service
- Devices with the highest repeat-failure rate
- Devices requiring periodic calibration
Spare parts and consumables
Define a critical spare parts list per device and hold it locally where lead times are long. A small missing part can stop a device for weeks.
What a service contract should state
- Number of scheduled visits per year
- Scope of work at each visit
- Agreed response window for faults
- What the contract covers and what is charged separately
- A report and service record after each visit
