First: the room
- Clear floor area and circulation around the table
- Airflow and separation of clean and soiled routes
- Cleanable, disinfectable wall and floor surfaces
- Power, back-up supply and medical gas points
Second: core equipment
| Item | What to define at purchase |
|---|---|
| Operating table | Load, positioning and target specialties |
| Surgical lighting | Intensity, field depth and mounting |
| Anaesthesia machine | Ventilation modes and integrated monitoring |
| Electrosurgery | Power, modes and accessories |
| Endoscopy systems | Camera, light source and displays |
| Pendants | Gas, power and data distribution |
Third: instruments and consumables
Instrument sets are defined by the planned surgical specialties and the number of daily lists, and must match the capacity of the sterile supply department. One set is not enough for a room running more than one list a day.
Fourth: commissioning before the first list
- Test each device, then the room as a system
- Verify medical gas points and alarms
- Train surgical and technical teams on the equipment
- Document handover and device records
