Planning guide

Operating room equipment checklist

An operating room is an engineering and a clinical project at once. This guide orders what is normally planned before equipment is bought, what is then bought, and what is tested before the first operating list.

First: the room

  • Clear floor area and circulation around the table
  • Airflow and separation of clean and soiled routes
  • Cleanable, disinfectable wall and floor surfaces
  • Power, back-up supply and medical gas points

Second: core equipment

ItemWhat to define at purchase
Operating tableLoad, positioning and target specialties
Surgical lightingIntensity, field depth and mounting
Anaesthesia machineVentilation modes and integrated monitoring
ElectrosurgeryPower, modes and accessories
Endoscopy systemsCamera, light source and displays
PendantsGas, power and data distribution

Third: instruments and consumables

Instrument sets are defined by the planned surgical specialties and the number of daily lists, and must match the capacity of the sterile supply department. One set is not enough for a room running more than one list a day.

Fourth: commissioning before the first list

  • Test each device, then the room as a system
  • Verify medical gas points and alarms
  • Train surgical and technical teams on the equipment
  • Document handover and device records

ALQASER's scope in operating rooms

ALQASER delivers operating room projects as a single scope: design and engineering, modular construction and laminar flow, tables, lights and pendants, electrosurgery and endoscopy systems and instrument sets, with installation, validation and maintenance programmes.
