Start from the service required
Define which examinations are needed and their expected daily volume, then choose systems accordingly. A centre offering general examinations has different needs from a department serving emergency and theatres around the clock.
Systems and their roles
| System | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Fixed digital X-ray | General, high-volume examinations |
| Mobile X-ray | Bedside imaging in critical care and wards |
| C-arm | Intra-operative imaging |
| Mammography | Dedicated breast imaging |
| Fluoroscopy | Dynamic studies |
| Ultrasound | General and specialised diagnostics |
Room requirements
- Floor area, ceiling height and the delivery route
- Shielding appropriate to the system and room location
- Stable power supply and earthing
- Cooling with temperature and humidity control
- Control station position and patient visibility
Workflow and reporting
An imaging department does not end at the image but at the report. Plan the path from device to viewing station to archive, and confirm system compatibility before purchase rather than after.
